This was a weird year. There was a ton of music. I did not get to all of it. A lot of it I crammed in the last two weeks of the year. With so much new content and time and so few ways to access it (RIP live shows, record stores, and pretty much everything but Bandcamp being garbage) we are somehow living in abundance and restriction simultaneously.
And of course, the weirdness and horribleness colored my tastes and preferences for what I want to hear (look, Radiohead's Amnesiac remains one of my favorite albums of all time but you're kidding yourself if you think I could survive a thorough play of that this year). So here's my best effort to summarize 2020 in music.

At some point in December every year, I typically give up on finalizing my best-of-the-year list, finding myself unable to actually choose my 10-20 favorite albums. Obviously 2020 is going down as one of the strangest years of my life. I spent many days in my home, questioning if I had slipped into an episode of the Twilight Zone, or was still apart of some strange dream. To pass the time, I rewatched all of Star Trek: The Next Generation, pretended that my home was a cruise ship, and revisited my entire record collection - listening to every record that I own alphabetically (Currently, I am in letter P!). However, I had a rule: If the album was released in 2020, it could be listened to at any time (what a way to break-up all those Bowie & The National records!). Here’s what I spent 2020 listening to:

What a year - the many complications of 2020 made for a year where I needed some kind of fun. That arrived in the many dance and electronic albums released this year that kept me going. Many of those are highlighted in this top ten list.
It has been a joy to provide music on Monday mornings during this difficult time. It is my hope that CHIRP has brought you some moments of calm during the storm that was 2020. In addition, thank you so much to our donors that gave so much to keep us going. It is appreciated and we are grateful.
